Warning! Political Talk Ahead!

“The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing” ~ Edmund Burke

This election is a difficult one for many reasons. What is a good Catholic to do? Over the years, Mike has been involved in politics on the local, state, and federal level. He has had time to think and pray about some principles that apply to this election in America, but also to elections in other countries and at other times. We think you will find this advice practical and helpful as we navigate these muddy waters in our election this year.

  1. Thank you for your podcast – I’ve gained so much from it. I just wanted to say that I don’t think there is “nothing to gain” by casting a vote for someone other than the two primary candidate. Bishop Conley had an excellent article about voting your conscience. However, even politically, speaking, historically voting 3rd party or write-in may not effect the immediate election but it has ramifications on the direction the party is heading and what we consider acceptable. Especially given that in my state, the Republican candidate has no chance of winning, I would much rather put in a “protest vote” to show that there is a group of people who do not think either of these people are acceptable leaders for our country. A vote for 3rd party is not a “vote for Trump” or a “vote for Hillary” (not that you said it was, but thats a common argument) its a declaration that our beliefs do not and cannot align with either of these two people. This, in my opinion, has been the only election in my memory where so many different choices are acceptable.
